The Best Technology Is the Kind You Don't Even Notice
Derrick Thames has designed and integrated the technology in both of our homes, Laguna Beach and Ocean Boulevard. Audio, visual, automation, security, all of it. And his philosophy is something I love: the best technology is invisible. He calls it "lifestyle luxury," and after walking through both homes with him, I understand exactly what he means.

30 Years of Making Technology Disappear
Derrick brings over 30 years of experience in home technology. He's a self-described geek, born and bred, but what makes him different from most tech integrators is that he doesn't want you to see his work. He wants you to feel it.
His approach is to either hide the technology completely or use it to enhance the aesthetics of a space. A speaker that's invisible behind a wall. Lighting that responds to the time of day without you touching anything. A security system that protects without intruding. The goal is always the same: optimize the experience of every room without ever drawing attention to the equipment.
Lifestyle Luxury | What It Actually Means
A lot of technology companies install systems. Derek designs experiences. The difference is in how he thinks about each space, not as a technical problem to solve, but as a lifestyle to support.
When he walked through our Laguna Beach home for the first time, the thing that impressed him most wasn't the equipment or the wiring. It was how closely the technology matched the lifestyle Joe and I had envisioned. Every detail was considered, from the background music that plays when you walk into a room to the way the shades adjust based on sunlight. None of it feels robotic. It feels like the house knows you.
That's what "lifestyle luxury" means. Technology that serves the way you live, not the other way around.
These Homes Are Art
Derrick said something during our conversation that stuck with me: "These homes are really art." And he's right. When you think about what goes into a home like ours, the architecture from Chris Light, the Italian millwork from the Davini Group, the interior design from Frank Barry, the staging from Vesta, the lighting from MWG Electric, every layer is artistic.
Technology is the invisible layer underneath all of it. It's what makes the art come alive. It's the sound that fills a room without a visible speaker. It's the warmth of a home that adjusts itself. It's security you trust without thinking about. Derek's job is to make sure all of that works seamlessly, so you can just live.
Working Together Across Both Homes
What's special about Derrick’s relationship with us is continuity. He designed the technology in our Laguna Beach home, learned how we live, and then applied everything he learned to Ocean Boulevard. The second home benefited from years of understanding what works for our family.
That kind of relationship, where your technology partner knows you as well as your architect and your designer, is rare. And it's one of the reasons both homes feel like ours from the moment you walk in.
